Biology faculty member sharing expertise for TV productions

WKU biology faculty member Dr. Steve Huskey is preparing to use his research and expertise for more TV productions.
A production team from Australia will visit the WKU campus next week (July 23-24) to record segments for a NOVA show about shark attacks.
“I will serve as the bite expert,” said Dr. Huskey, an associate professor in WKU’s Department of Biology who is a functional morphologist and studies the feeding mechanisms and feeding habits of fish. “The crew wanted a laboratory setting for bite testing. We will be using my labs and Dr. Chris Byrne’s materials testing equipment in the Department of Engineering, dental moldings from an already bitten surfboard, specialized microscopes, and real shark teeth. Essentially we’ll be utilizing technology and teeth to assess shark bite damage.”

The power of making in helping us to think differently

Nike have a new initiative – ‘Nike Makers’. Nike never beat about the bush. Or think small. “We’re here to unveil a new age of design. One that is about making better things and making things better.”
The starting point is materials. They are releasing the API for the Nike Sustainable Materials Index so that makers of code can create apps which will let makers of things design using more sustainable materials.

America’s Running of the Bulls? It’s Total Bull

Here’s what a 40-year-old contestant of Pamplona, Spain’s annual bull run once said about his experience unsuccessfully attempting to outrun an angry 1,000-pound bull: “When you are gored, you feel as if you have been stabbed, like a truck has run over you. My back was covered in blood, but those are the risks of the bull run.”
Unfortunately for the bulls, the option of whether or not to gore such an intelligent fellow is really no option at all. For decades, the running of the bulls has unfolded in the streets of Pamplona. The encierro takes place every morning at 8 a.m. from July 7 to 14. With the launching of two rockets, a dozen steers and bulls charge behind thousands of runners for 825 meters into a bull ring. The run usually lasts between three and four minutes, and, in 2011, at least, resulted in the goring, trampling, and injury of 41 people.

ExDelphi, “desesperados”, piden a Junta y partidos “responsabilidad” p

El colectivo de afectados por el cierre de Delphi ha llamado a la "responsabilidad" a la Junta de Andalucía y a los partidos con
representación en el Parlamento andaluz –PP, PSOE e IU– para encontrar,
después de seis años, una salida "real y definitiva" para el
"aproximadamente medio millar" de personas que quedan pendientes de
recolocar y que se han visto arrastrados a una situación "absolutamente
desesperada".

Fuentes sindicales han explicado a Europa Press que esta semana se han
quedado "esperando" y no se ha celebrado finalmente ninguna de las
reuniones a las que se habían comprometido PP e IU, con cuyo coordinador
general en Andalucía, Antonio Maíllo, quieren tener un "primer
contacto" para abordar el tema.
